Rums that are at or above the strength the Daily Rum Ration or 'Tot' was served in the Royal Navy.
For the third release of the Black Tot Master Blender's Reserve, master blender Oliver Chilton has selected rum blends from Guyana, Trinidad, Jamaica, and Barbados to create a rum that pays homage to the flavour profiles found in the Black Tot historical collection. The rums in the collection are bursting with banana, mellow spice, and cocoa powder, and this is certainly showcased here. Tasting Notes; Nose: Melted chocolate nibs, toasted hazelnuts, warm orange, cinnamon sticks, blackcurrant, and raspberry leaf. Palate: Milk chocolate-covered raisins, café latte, ripe banana, aniseed, crème caramel with demerara sugar, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Finish: Cinnamon and nutmeg spice, chili, and cocoa.

Black Tot Rum 2024 Master Blender's Reserve is the fifth annual release of this remarkable series. For 2024, the brand focused on one country in particular, with rums from Barbados forming 60% of the blend. It’s aged in a combination of American and European oak casks and offered un-chill filtered at 54.5% ABV, with a total outturn limited to 3,000 bottles worldwide. Tasting Notes; Nose: The nose is very elegant and well-balanced, the aromas seep out of the glass like a fine perfume. It starts with an incredible array of sweet aromas – pineapple cubes, fudge, coconut cream, strawberry laces, passion fruit syrup, mango, white chocolate, honey, butter. In support, there’s oak, red chilli warmth, lime juice, and fresh herbs which bring complexity. Palate: Some oak spice and nutmeg give a viscous palate a slightly prickly edge through which notes of red cola cubes, brown sugar, vanilla, caramel, Caroni-style engine oil, and a little peppermint emerge. Throughout there’s more fresh tropical fruit, with banana taking more of a centre stage alongside papaya, melon, mango, and pineapple. Finish: Slick and tongue-coating with liquorice and anise setting the tone. Dark chocolate, lime, warming vanilla-y oak, and the remnants of tropical fruit salvo linger.

Dark rum starts off as the same clear spirit that makes light rum. However, instead of being filtered and bottled right after being distilled, dark rums are aged first. By aging the rum in charred oak or wooden barrels for a period of time, they end up with a darker color and a bolder flavour. Some may also contain colouring.

Black Tot Historic Solera, from the team that brought us a modern take on the Navy blend, very much does what it says on the tin. This solera-matured stunner is a proper blend with a proper breakdown: Guyana and Barbados lead the charge, with a dash of high-ester Jamaican pot still funk. Aged in bourbon casks seasoned with Pedro Ximénez and oloroso, then matured through a 70 year old, three-tier solera system for layered depth. No sugar or filtration here. Tasting Notes; Nose: A wave of chocolate-covered raisins, sticky toffee, and the faintest flicker of banana. Then come the sherry notes – strawberry jam, peach fuzz, and tart raspberry. A lick of ginger and a puff of dusty oak round it out. Palate: Toffee and PX sweetness up front, followed by darker fruits and nutty warmth. A hint of pineapple, a whisper of tobacco, and a firm grip of oaky spice. Finish: Peaches and strawberries linger, along with light oak, pepper, and a tease of blackberry jam.
